![]() Berlin Wall After World War II, economic disparities between East and West Germany drove East Germans by the thousands to seek a new life in the west. Depsite the closing of the shared border in 1952, travel was still permitted between East and West Berlin, and by 1960 the total number of East German citizens who had gone west and not returned had reached 2.6 million. The East German government saw not option but to seal off the border completely - an initiative that was realized with the completion of the Berlin Wall in 1961. The 'border' actually developed into a system of deterents including concrete walls, Stalin's grass (steel stakes implanted in the ground), mesh fencing, alarm cables, bunkers, wire entaglements, guard-dog runs, vehicle ditches, electric fencing, and open land. The wall disected 26 miles of Berlin (103 miles in total), including 192 streets, 32 rail lines, subways, rivers, and lakes. Waterways were protected by submerged railings. Constant surveillance was maintained via 302 guard towers, 14,000 border guards, and over 600 dogs. The demise of the wall, opposed by many groups from the beginning, truley ignited in 1989 with the Soviet Union's declaration to no longer prevent democratic transformation of its satellite states. Immediate loosening of restrictions in Hugary and Poland led to more mass exodus, and the fall of the wall was inevitable - 11/9/1989 the borders were reopened for travel - 12/26/1989 the Brandenburg Gate was reopened - 6/13/1990 begins systematic removal of the wall - 10/3/1990 the reunification of the two German states.
