![]() The Passenger Pigeon ...probably not since the last know bird of the species died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden in 1914. At the time Europeans arrived in North America, it is estimated that the Passenger Pigeon population numbered close to 5 billion, stretching in range the entire sub-Arctic extent of the continent from the Atlantic to the Great Plains. Market hunting, in the form of netting, shooting, and sulfer fumigation, often killing 50,000 birds per hunt, escalated in the mid 1800s, and by the 1890s the Passenger Pigeon had all but disappeared. The last reported bird taken in the wild was shot at Babcock, Wisconsin in 1899. Full Story
